I had the once in a lifetime chance to interview GrandMaster Caz this week and it was everything.

GrandMaster Caz is best known as the first Hip hop artist to Dj and MC at the same time. But, he is much more than that now. He is a dedicated family man and an advocate for his Community. He also has his own brand!

My favorite Caz tracks

We all know the music… here are my personal favorites

Incredible track. Yes, it’s been done and redone, but there’s nothing like this mix. There is something about Kool Moe Dee and Grandmaster Caz’s version that just screams. I am a HUGE Al Green fan. It’s my cleaning the house music, little Al and a dance party in the kitchen. This track is on the list, for sure.

“Can any other rapper hang? hell no!”

This freestyle is exactly what’s up. Caz’s flow is swift and fly and he keeps it fresh.

This is my favorite GrandMaster Caz track. This beat can make me get up and dance any day! Caz makes all the ladies want to jump on his kiss list.

“I don’t come at all if it ain’t correct”

GrandMaster Caz the Interview

I had the chance to ask Caz three questions and here’s how that went:

What were your career aspirations before that fateful day that you went to the Kool Herc party? If you had missed that party, where do you think your career path would have led you?

Caz – “Prior to Hip Hop sports and art were my main hobbies and activities. I hadn’t decided on a career path yet at that point and when I first experienced the elements of the culture I felt I had found my calling.”

Having been there to witness your Step son Jonathan going down the wrong path and then coming back stronger than ever, what is your advice for for young people about avoiding going down the path of drugs and violence? How about getting out of that trouble once they’re in it?

Caz – “Growing up when we reach adolescence it changes our perceptions because the older we get the more we’re just as influenced by outside forces like peer pressure which sometimes don’t coincide with our original core values we learn at home and in school. The best we can do is set positive examples in the home and teach our kids to not disregard their core values in lieu of superficial ones and to support them when they do and provide a safe haven for them to correct their mistakes and get their lives back on track. There is no shame in mistakes unless they go uncorrected.”

Caz’s advice for the up and coming artists and the Hip hop youth

What advice do you have for up and coming Hip hop artists when it comes to being original? What can they do to stand out in a positive way?

Caz – “My advice to upcoming hip hop artists is to try to add something to the culture that isn’t there now. Not just your presence but your difference is what will set you apart.”

That’s some pretty great advice. Exactly what we need from this living LEGEND.
