What’s up with Kool Herc?
We all know and love Kool Herc. If you don’t, listen up because I’m about to teach you something about Hip Hop. Kool Herc is THE man that started the Hip hop community back in the 70’s in the Bronx, NY.
Kool Herc is a DJ and a pioneer. He started off playing music in his neighborhood. Then, he began isolating parts of different funk tracks and the Breakbeat style was born.
Kool Herc – The Music
The funky beat and instrumental is where Kool Herc got started. “B-Boy” is so quintessential Hip hop and Kool Herc is the MASTER DJ and Producer. This style of Hip hop, it’s really where it’s at for me. I love the old school sound, especially the music from the 70’s.
His album “Last of the Classic Beats” is an amazing collaboration with Mr. Green. The track “My Guitar” is a slower beat with an edge. The guitar riffs are funky and the sound is a bit old school and a bit futuristic. This man was way ahead of his time.
Where is Kool Herc now?
In 2019, he released his first vinyl “The Last of the Classic Beats. In 2020, Kool Herc and his sister Cindy Campbell (The first lady of Hip hop) were interviewed by Billboard and spoke about opening a Hip hop museum in Jamaica. This project is still in the works.
Since then, he has been keeping a low profile. He has not been touring or releasing music and he has kind of gone underground to hibernate. I bet we see a few new tricks from the Father of Hip hop soon!
